Indian news media's dependence on advertising, and increasingly on corporate ownership and government advertising spend, shapes editorial incentives in ways audiences rarely see directly. Television's ratings-driven economics reward outrage over accuracy, while print's slower decline and digital's subscription experiments point to alternative paths. The crisis in Indian journalism is substantially a crisis of who pays for it and what they expect in return.

State governments, chiefly in the south, administer tens of thousands of Hindu temples through statutory endowment boards, a colonial-origin arrangement justified as preventing mismanagement of temple wealth.
