From the NCERT textbook disputes of the 1970s to recent syllabus revisions dropping chapters on the Mughals and the Emergency, Indian history has repeatedly become a proxy battle for present political legitimacy. This essay separates the recurring political pattern from the historian's actual methodological commitments, using specific controversies as evidence. It argues that the discipline's defence lies in procedure and evidence, not in counter-nationalism.

The Constituent Assembly debates, running from December 1946 to November 1949, contain sharp disagreements over federalism, minority rights, language and property that were resolved through negotiated compromise rather than decisive majority votes. Revisiting specific exchanges shows how much deliberate craftsmanship went into provisions now treated as settled and obvious. The essay argues this history offers a model of political patience increasingly rare in contemporary practice.

Before Gandhi and mass nationalism dominated the political imagination, a generation of nineteenth-century reformers including Rammohun Roy, Mahadev Govind Ranade and Pandita Ramabai articulated a liberal vision centred on individual rights, legal reform and gender equality. This essay recovers that tradition and asks why it was marginalised by the nationalist movement that followed it. It argues the marginalisation carries costs still visible in Indian public discourse.
