India faces climate change from an unusual position: low historical emissions per person, high present vulnerability, and a legitimate need to grow energy use. Heatwaves are lengthening, monsoon distribution is becoming more erratic, coastlines and Himalayan catchments are under stress, and the districts most exposed are often the least resourced to adapt. The energy transition is real but uneven — renewable capacity is rising quickly while grid flexibility, storage and distribution-company finances lag. Environmental clearance processes are contested from both directions: slow and uncertain for genuine projects, and insufficiently rigorous where ecosystems are irreplaceable. Forest, wetland and coastal data is inconsistent across agencies. Meanwhile adaptation — heat action plans, drainage, crop resilience, early warning — receives a fraction of the attention that mitigation targets attract, even though it is what protects Indians in this decade.

Climate impacts arrive as ordinary events: a failed sowing season, a flooded street, a heat day that kills outdoor workers, an insurance premium nobody can afford. They fall hardest on people with the least buffer. Adapting well protects lives and livelihoods now, and building a clean, reliable energy system decides whether India's growth is affordable and secure for the next fifty years.
