Economic Prosperity Mission

Growth that is broad-based, measured honestly and debated openly

The Challenge

India's economy is large and growing, but prosperity is distributed unevenly across regions, sectors and households, and the public debate about it is unusually low-quality. Statistics are contested, comparisons are cherry-picked, and long-run structural questions get crowded out by quarterly narratives. Meanwhile the real constraints are stubborn: low manufacturing employment, thin state capacity for regulation, high logistics costs, uneven credit access for small firms, a large informal sector outside social protection, and fiscal space consumed by subsidies whose incidence is rarely evaluated. State-level economic performance varies enormously, yet inter-state learning is rare. Household balance sheets carry rising unsecured credit. And the fundamental measurement question — how many Indians have secure, rising real incomes — is answered with proxies rather than with timely, trusted data that every side of the debate accepts.

Why It Matters

Economic outcomes decide what the state can afford to do about every other issue on this list. Broad-based prosperity funds schools, courts, clean air and health, and it is what turns a young population into a productive one. Citizens who can interpret economic data honestly are also far harder to sell simplistic promises to, from any direction.

Our Approach

  • Research: analyse growth, employment, inflation and state-level economic data carefully.
  • Public awareness: publish honest, non-partisan explainers on economic indicators.
  • Community participation: connect economists, business owners and citizens in local forums.
  • Civic engagement: examine state and municipal fiscal choices with residents.
  • Policy discussion: convene evidence-led debates on taxation, subsidies and firm growth.
