Rural India First

A large share of Indians still live in rural areas, and a larger share of the workforce depends on agriculture than agriculture's share of national income can support. Farm incomes are squeezed between input costs and volatile output prices; land holdings keep fragmenting; irrigation access is uneven; and post-harvest infrastructure — storage, cold chain, grading, transport — is thin enough that value is captured far from the farm. Non-farm rural employment, which is the realistic path out, remains limited by poor connectivity, unreliable power and distance from markets. Panchayats have constitutional standing but often lack untied funds and technical support. Rural health, schooling and banking access remain weaker than urban equivalents, driving distress migration that is counted as urbanisation but experienced as displacement. Data at the village level is sparse, so schemes are designed nationally and adapted locally only by accident.

Rural prosperity is not charity to villages; it is the demand base for Indian industry and the stabiliser for Indian cities. When rural incomes stagnate, urban migration becomes distress migration, urban infrastructure is overwhelmed, and national demand weakens. And the moral case is simple: citizenship should not deliver a different quality of school, clinic or court depending on the pin code you were born in.

• Public awareness: publish clear analysis of schemes, entitlements and market reforms.
• Community participation: support farmer collectives and village-level knowledge sharing.
• Civic engagement: help gram sabhas use planning and audit powers effectively.
• Policy discussion: examine procurement, storage, credit and devolution with practitioners.

• Join discussions with rural members and practitioners.
• Share market, weather and entitlement information that is verified.
• Volunteer with rural literacy, health or agri-extension initiatives.
• Attend gram sabha and district planning meetings where you can.
