Women's Safety & Opportunity

Women's safety in India is usually discussed after a crime and rarely designed for beforehand. Lighting, footpaths, public transport frequency, functioning toilets, staffed help desks and reliable last-mile connectivity determine whether a woman can take a night shift, attend a class or run a business. Reporting mechanisms often fail at the first step, and conviction timelines stretch for years. At the same time, women's participation in the paid workforce remains low and has not risen with rising education — a combination of unpaid care burden, unsafe or unavailable commuting, workplace practices, and social expectation. Enterprise faces similar friction: property and credit are still disproportionately held in men's names, limiting collateral. Data on gendered use of public space and services is scarce, so cities are planned around a default commuter who is male, motorised and travelling twice a day.

An economy that keeps half its talent out of the workforce cannot reach its potential, and a society where movement after dark is a calculated risk is not free. Safety and opportunity are linked: a woman who cannot travel safely cannot take the better job, and a woman without independent income has fewer options in an unsafe home. This affects every family in India, not a special-interest group.
